I began and currently coordinate the Linfield College Mentoring Program (LCMP), connecting college students and kids in grades 1-8. Now, three months after our program began, we have 21 mentors at three different schools, mentoring at-risk students who badly need positive role models. The mentors have lunch with their mentees once a week and attend biweekly trainings with me to learn more about communication, the mentor’s role, etc.
Over the course of a (hopefully) four-year relationship, mentors tutor/advise/help/teach/listen to their mentees and, more than anything, befriend them. These relationships make a huge difference in the students’ lives academically, socially, personally.
