Annually, almost a quarter of the
20,000 children that “age out” of the foster system are left homeless. These
youth lack the skills to transition into adulthood.
Unfortunately, a parallel tragedy is
unfolding for animals. Every year, twelve million of our nation's animals are
euthanized because of overpopulation. Last year, Philadelphia euthanized over
15,000 companion animals. Shelters lack the volunteers to care for the influx
of animals, many of which require extensive rehabilitation.
In December of 2009, I founded Hand2Paw
to provide job opportunities and therapeutic experiences for homeless youth in
Philadelphia, and increased volunteer help for area animal shelters. I run a
group volunteering program and a paid internship program with two youth social
service organizations and two large animal shelters in Philadelphia.
