Project H.O.P.E addressed the growing
rate of college dropouts due to unplanned pregnancy. Arizona ranks third in the
nation for unplanned pregnancy; sixty-one-percent of college students who have
children after enrolling don’t finish their education. With these alarming
statistics MCC students “Found a Need, Took the Lead, and Did the Deed.”
By bringing together Service-Learning students, Phi Theta Kappa members and
faculty, we tackled the social challenge of completing ones education by
promoting healthy relationships and family planning. I took these combined
efforts and presented educational and motivational workshops to several local
colleges, a high-school designed for high-risk students, a foster care
facility, and several faith-based and non-profit organizations.
I submitted my idea of Project H.O.P.E
to the 2010 White House Summit on Community Colleges. Americans was asked to
post a comment on the Summits website in regards to college reform. After
posting my blog addressing family planning and college completion I campaigned
for votes within my college, community, and networking on the internet. My
determination and passion for Project H.O.P.E., led my blog to rank first out
of 787 ideas presented. As a result, I was interviewed and published by a
Pulitzer Prize winning journalist, Laura Stepp from CNN.
