My
involvement in Project H.O.P.E made me realize how my story could help others
heading down the same road I had traveled. A mother at 15 and now a permanent
foster-parent to my brother’s four children I understood the impact of
unplanned pregnancy on families and the community.
Joining
AmeriCorps and becoming involved in Service-Learning showed me the connection
between education and the community. Project H.O.P.E. has had a ripple effect
on my life allowing me to emerge a leader. It set into motion my desire to run
for President of Phi Theta Kappa and I have made lifelong friendships with
amazing people all over the country sharing the same dreams, stories, and
aspirations.
This project reinforced by own beliefs
that one person can make a difference and that several more can move mountains.
Sharing a video of my personal story on our website has empowered me to
continue the fight for this important cause. My desire to help others and
make a social change will be passed onto my children as they grow into young
adults. Through my own experiences, I will have the tools to talk to my
children about their life choices when the time comes.
